Same Day Dental Implants in Wilmslow

Tooth out and implant in at the same appointment, with a temporary tooth fitted that day where the case allows. From £2,000.

Croft Dental at 64 Manchester Road in Wilmslow offers same day implants from £2,000, where a failing tooth is removed and an implant placed at the same appointment, with a temporary tooth fitted that day where the implant is stable enough. Treatment is led by Dr Nikhil Oberai, who holds an MSc in Implant Dentistry from the University of Manchester. Suitability is confirmed with a CBCT 3D scan on site, and implant consultations are free.

So, can you really have an implant the same day?

single dental implant the croft dental wilmslow

Often, yes. Not always, and we’d rather tell you that now.

The traditional route goes like this. The tooth comes out. You wait several months for the socket to heal. Then the implant goes in, and you wait again while it fuses with the bone. All told, it can be the best part of a year living with a gap or a removable plate.

A same day implant takes the first wait out. The tooth is removed and the implant is placed straight into the socket at the same appointment. Where the implant is held firmly enough, a temporary tooth goes on top before you leave.

You walk out with a tooth in the gap rather than a hole.

The deciding factor is stability. The implant has to grip the surrounding bone firmly on the day. That depends on how much healthy bone is there, whether there’s infection at the root, and where the tooth sits in the mouth.

We plan it carefully with a CBCT 3D scan beforehand, but the final decision on the temporary tooth is made during surgery, not promised in advance. If it can’t be done that day, nothing is lost. The bone is protected, the implant follows a little later, and you still end up with the same result.

Your options when a tooth has to come out

If a tooth can’t be saved, there are two broad routes to an implant. Which one suits you depends mainly on the bone and the health of the area, and the 3D scan answers most of that before the day.

Same day implant

  • Tooth removed and implant placed at one appointment
  • A temporary tooth fitted the same day where the implant is stable enough
  • Fewer surgical appointments overall
  • Helps keep the shape of the bone and gum around the socket
  • Not suitable where there’s active infection or too little bone

Extraction first, implant later

  • The tooth is removed and the area left to heal
  • A socket preservation graft, from £450, can reduce bone loss while it heals
  • The implant is placed once the site has healed, usually a few months later
  • Suits cases with infection or limited bone
  • Takes longer and usually means more appointments

Which one suits you

Your mouth decides, not a brochure. When a front tooth is failing and the bone around it is healthy, a same day implant is often very achievable, and the temporary tooth means nobody needs to know.

Back teeth with several roots, or teeth with long-standing infection, are more often treated in two stages.

Either way, the finished implant is the same. The difference is the route and the timing, and we’ll explain which applies to you with the scan in front of you.

Am I a suitable candidate?

Most adults with a single failing tooth and reasonable bone are worth assessing for a same day implant. Dr Nikhil will examine the tooth, take a CBCT 3D scan and talk you through what’s realistic before anything is booked.

Usually suitable if you

  • Have a tooth that can’t be saved, such as a fractured tooth or a failed root filling
  • Have healthy bone around the root
  • Have no active infection at the root
  • Have healthy gums, or gum disease that has been treated
  • Do not smoke, or are willing to stop while the implant heals

We will need to assess further if you

  • Have an abscess or long-standing infection at the root
  • Have lost bone around the tooth, since bone grafting may be needed first
  • Are replacing an upper back tooth close to the sinus
  • Grind your teeth heavily, since early pressure on a new implant needs controlling
  • Have diabetes or another condition that affects healing

What the temporary tooth is for

The temporary tooth is there for appearance and confidence while the implant fuses with the bone. It’s deliberately kept slightly out of your bite so the implant isn’t loaded while it settles.

You’ll be asked to stick to softer food on that side for a while. Once the implant has fused, usually after three to six months, the permanent crown is made and fitted.

Your treatment journey

  1. 1
Step one: consultation and 3D scan
Dr Nikhil examines the site, discusses your options and takes a CBCT 3D scan. The scan shows bone volume, density and the position of the nerves and sinuses, which is how the implant position is planned precisely rather than approximately. You receive a written treatment plan with full costs afterwards.
  2. 2
    Step two: any preparatory work
If the tooth is still in place and needs removing, if gum disease needs treating, or if bone needs building up through a graft, that happens first. Healing time depends on what is required.
  3. 3
    Step three: implant placement
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic. For a single implant the procedure usually takes under an hour, and you will feel pressure rather than pain. Where the gap is visible when you smile, a temporary tooth is fitted, so you do not leave with a space.
  4. 4
    Step four: healing and integration
The implant needs three to six months to fuse with the bone. There is very little to do during this period beyond keeping the area clean and attending a review appointment. Most patients carry on entirely as normal.
  5. 5
    Step five: digital impressions
Once integration is confirmed we take a digital scan so your crown can be made. Shade is matched to your surrounding teeth at this stage.
  6. 6
    Step six: fitting your crown
The final crown is fitted and adjusted so it sits correctly against the opposing teeth. This appointment is usually short and requires no anaesthetic.
  7. 7
    Step seven: recovery and aftercare
Most patients are back at work the following day. Some swelling and tenderness is normal for the first few days and typically settles within three to five. Stick to softer foods initially and chew on the other side.

Once healed there is nothing to avoid. We review the implant afterwards and continue to check it at your routine appointments, and it is cleaned like any other tooth.

Full written aftercare instructions are provided on the day, and you can ring the practice at any point if something does not feel right.

Dr Nikhil places single implants at Croft Dental and has completed hundreds of cases with a success rate of 99.5%. His Master’s degree from the University of Manchester involved several years of postgraduate study devoted entirely to implantology, which is a considerably deeper qualification than the short certificate courses many dentists complete before offering implants.

He is a member of the Association of Dental Implantology, a Key Opinion Leader for Osstem, and an Honorary Clinical Teaching Fellow at the University of Manchester, where he helps train dentists on the implant programme. Practices across the North West refer their complex implant cases to him.

Two things come up again and again in his patient reviews. The first is that he explains everything before he does it. The second is that it did not hurt.

Frequently asked questions

Same day implants at Croft Dental start from £2,000. Extraction, grafting or sedation, where needed, are quoted separately, and your written treatment plan shows the full cost before anything begins.

Yes, in suitable cases. It depends on the health of the bone around the tooth and whether there's infection at the root. A CBCT 3D scan shows most of this beforehand, and the final decision is made during surgery.

Where the implant is stable enough, a temporary tooth is fitted the same day. If it isn't, we'll make sure you're not left with a visible gap while the implant heals.

Once it has fused with the bone and the permanent crown is fitted, it works in the same way as an implant placed in a healed site. Careful case selection is what makes the difference, which is why we scan first.

The extraction and implant placement are carried out under local anaesthetic, and most patients describe it as less uncomfortable than they expected. Sedation is available from £350.

Usually three to six months, once the implant has fused with the bone. The temporary tooth stays in place until then.

The tooth is removed and the bone protected, often with a socket preservation graft from £450. The implant is then placed once the area has healed.

Yes. Implant consultations at Croft Dental are free. A CBCT 3D scan, from £80, is usually needed to confirm whether a same day implant is possible.
