Children's Dentistry in Wilmslow
Relaxed, unhurried check ups for children on Manchester Road. Book the whole family in together and get it done in one trip.
Croft Dental at 64 Manchester Road in Wilmslow sees children as private patients alongside their parents. A children's examination is £30 and fluoride treatment is £30, and families can be booked in on the same day so it's one trip rather than several. Visits are kept short, explained in plain words and paced around the child. The practice has its own parking outside and is open Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 6.30pm.
So, when should a child first see the dentist?
Earlier than most parents expect. UK guidance encourages a first dental visit by a child’s first birthday, ideally once the first teeth come through.
At that age very little happens. A look in the mouth, a chat with you about brushing and diet, perhaps a ride up and down in the chair. That is rather the point.
A first visit where nothing hurts sets the tone for every visit after it.
Children who only ever see a dentist when something is wrong tend to grow up dreading it. Plenty of the nervous adults we treat can trace their worries back to exactly that.
If your child is older and has never been, that’s fine too. Bring them in and we’ll start gently.
What happens at a children's check up
- A gentle look around: teeth, gums and the soft tissues of the mouth, checked at a pace that suits your child.
- Counting and naming: younger children often enjoy helping us count their teeth. It turns the examination into something they take part in rather than something done to them.
- Checking for early decay: the first signs are usually small chalky patches, and caught early they can often be reversed with better brushing and fluoride.
- Watching the adult teeth arrive: we keep an eye on spacing, crowding and how the permanent teeth are coming through, so any straightening questions come up at the right time.
- Advice for you: brushing technique, toothpaste strength, snacks and drinks. Practical, not preachy.
- X-rays only when needed: children are not x-rayed routinely. We take them when there is a clinical reason and explain why first.
Protecting young teeth
Fluoride treatment
Fluoride varnish is painted onto the teeth in a few seconds. It strengthens the enamel and helps stop early decay going any further.
We’ll tell you whether your child would benefit, based on their risk of decay rather than a routine.
Brushing at home
Brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste makes more difference than anything else, and last thing at night matters most. Spit, don’t rinse, so the fluoride stays on the teeth.
Most children need a hand with brushing until they’re around seven, whatever they tell you.
Snacks and drinks
How often matters more than how much. Sweet things kept to mealtimes do far less harm than a juice carton sipped through the afternoon. Water and milk between meals are the safest choices.
Sports mouthguards
If your child plays rugby, hockey or another contact sport, a custom fitted mouthguard protects the front teeth far better than a boil-in-the-bag version.
Nervous children (and nervous parents)
- Tell us when you book and we’ll allow extra time.
- Bring a favourite toy, or let them sit on your lap for the first look.
- We explain what we’re doing in words they understand, and we stop if they want to stop.
Children pick up on how the adults around them feel about the dentist. If you’re anxious yourself, mention it. We see plenty of nervous patients and it’s never a problem.
Teeth straightening for teenagers
Crowding and spacing usually become clearer between about eleven and fourteen, once most of the adult teeth are through.
If straightening would help, we’ll talk you through the options, including Invisalign Teen, which uses clear removable aligners rather than fixed braces. Teeth straightening consultations are free.

Where to find us
Croft Dental sits at 64 Manchester Road, on the Handforth side of Wilmslow town centre. Coming up from The Carrs, we are north east along Manchester Road. If you reach Handforth Dean, you have gone too far.
We are around ten minutes on foot from Wilmslow station, five minutes from Handforth, and roughly ten minutes from Alderley Edge up the A34.
Patients register with us from Alderley Edge, Handforth, Styal, Prestbury, Mottram St Andrew, Knutsford, Macclesfield, Poynton, Mobberley, Bramhall and Cheadle.
For routine care, proximity genuinely matters. A practice you can get to easily is a practice you will actually attend, and over twenty years that is worth considerably more than any individual treatment. If you have recently moved to the area, registering with a dentist is one of the more easily forgotten jobs on the list. It takes a phone call.

- Finance
Spread the cost of treatment with finance or dental plan
We offer finance on larger treatment plans through Tabeo so the cost can be spread across monthly payments. Interest-free options are available with no arrangement fees or hidden charges.
For routine examinations and hygiene appointments, our practice plan is generally the more sensible route, spreading the cost across fixed monthly payments instead.

If it’s been a while since your last visit, if dental visits make you feel anxious, if you’ve recently moved to Wilmslow, or if you’re simply seeking a team that truly listens to your concerns, you’ll find a supportive and gentle environment here with us.
During your first appointment, we take the time to conduct a complete evaluation of your teeth, gums, and overall oral health. We will listen carefully to your goals, answer any questions, and collaboratively create a treatment plan tailored specifically to you.
"I have my smile back thanks to the skill of the team here. All in all, a very happy patient."
