What To Expect When Having Dental Implants

The dental implant procedure is broken down into 4 simple steps for you to get your new smile. If you have any specific questions are friendly team are on hand to help, and we will happily see you for a free consultation.

Step 1

Free Implant Consultation

The first step of the dental implant procedure is to come and see us for a no obligation free consultation. We will examine your mouth, listen to what your unhappy about, take any necessary scans/x-rays and devise a bespoke treatment plan based on the suitable options for you.

You will have time to decide which option is best for you and our friendly team will always be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Step 2

Implant Placement

Our implant surgeon will numb the area of the mouth having the implant and will then place the titanium post/s in the required areas (single/multiple implants depending on your case).

The appointment will usually take between one to two hours and will be painless due to the local anaesthetic. You will feel some mild discomfort when the implant is placed, but this will quickly pass and then the healing process will begin.

Depending on the treatment you have gone ahead with, either a temporary restoration will be fixed to your implants, or your final restoration (same day smiles). So when you leave you will not be left with a gap during the healing phase of the treatment.

Please note: Implant placements can be carried under sedation if you are a really nervous patient.

Step 2

Step 3

Biological Integration

This forms part of the healing phase following implant placement. Your implants will start to merge with the bone, which will create the stability & security you are after. This usually takes between 8-12 weeks to fully heal – but can take longer.

The implant when fully integrated will offer a robust & sturdy platform to anchor in your new crown, bridge or denture.

Step 4

Restoring The Implant

The final step of the dental implant procedure is to fit your new teeth securely onto the implants.

Following the creation of molds of the implant’s position, the final “teeth” can be individually designed, manufactured, and cemented or screwed into the implant. They will look, feel, and function just like a real tooth once they are in place.

Step 4

Dental Implants FAQs

A dental implant is used to replace a lost tooth or multiple missing teeth. Titanium post/s are carefully inserted into the jaw to replicate the function of a tooth root, and either a crown or other type of restoration (bridge/denture etc) is fitted to the titanium post/s, to create the same appearance & function of natural teeth.

The following are the primary problems that may cause your implant therapy to be delayed or even prevented:

  • Lack of bone density
  • Gum disease
  • Tooth grinding, a condition in which a person grinds their teeth excessively
  • Autoimmune illness
  • If you’ve received radiation in the area of your jaw

If you have or suspect you have any of the conditions listed above and are interested in dental implants, schedule an appointment with one of our dentists. We will be able to assess your condition and devise a treatment plan that is tailored to your needs.

The dental implant is placed under local anaesthesia. If you are a nervous patient, we can also administer sedation should you prefer it. After that, a little incision in the gum is done, and a tiny hole in the jaw bone is formed into which the titanium post is softly put. We would then either cover the implant with your gums and wait 10-12 weeks for it to recover before constructing the crown that sits on top of it, or we could build and fit a crown right away. Every patient has different needs, and we will customize each plan to meet your specific requirements.

We urge that you take a 48-hour break from strenuous activity, alcohol, and smoking. Each patient recovers differently, and minor face swelling and bruising have been reported in certain circumstances, but we will advise and accompany you throughout your treatment to help you avoid any side effects.
We will schedule a CT scan for you during the early phases of your treatment to see how much bone is available. If we discover you don’t have enough bone, we can perform a grafting treatment either before or after your implant is placed. All of your alternatives will be reviewed with you before you begin therapy.
We hold regular sedation sessions at the practice, so it’s simple for us to arrange if that’s something you want. Simply mention it during your complimentary dental consultation.
